Typical March weather - WAOW

It was interesting to see the brief burst of snow Tuesday morning produce some 1 to 2 inch snow amounts in parts of central Wisconsin. Of course a lot of that melted in the afternoon as temperatures climbed to the upper 30s. Overall the pattern will be warmer than normal through the extended forecast but of course there will be some ups and downs within that.

Tuesday night will feature partial clearing as lows drop to the lower 20s. Wednesday looks nice with partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 30s. Winds will be from the west-northwest at 5-12 mph Tuesday night and 7-15 mph Wednesday.

The next weather system will push into our area late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. There likely will be a period of snow Thursday morning that could produce a dusting to localized 2 inch amounts. So allow some extra travel time Thursday morning. Again it should melt off by midday as temperatures climb up to the low 40s for highs. A few leftover flurries and sprinkles are possible into the afternoon. It will be breezy as well.

Cooler air will settle in Friday with high pressure from Canada. However it should be rather sunny with lows in the low 20s and highs around 37.

The weekend looks top notch! Saturday should be mostly sunny with highs around the upper 40s. Now there will be a gusty southwest wind of 15-25 mph that we will have to battle. Otherwise there is not much to complain about. Sunday should be partly sunny and even warmer with highs in the low to mid 50s.

A low pressure system and cold front will move through Sunday night into Monday morning causing a widespread rain most likely. It might mix with a little snow before ending Monday. At this stage we expect at least one-third of an inch of rain. Of course this will increase the snow melt and runoff issues as we go into early next week.

Temperatures will cooling down with highs in the low 40s Monday and upper 30s next Tuesday. Sunshine should return next Tuesday though.

Have a great evening! Meteorologist Tony Schumacher, 2:35 p.m., 3-March 2020

On this date in weather history:

1983 - The last of a series of storms to strike the California coast finally came to an end. Waves fifteen to twenty feet high pounded the coast for two days, and in a four day period up to 18 inches of rain drenched the Los Angeles and Santa Barbara area. On the morning of the first, thunderstorms spawned two tornadoes which moved through the Los Angeles area. (Storm Data)
