The aisles inside of the usually bustling Discount Drug Mart in Akron’s Ellet neighborhood were empty Monday.
The few shoppers were keeping their social distance and respecting the Medina-based chain’s request to limit shoppers from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily at all of its stores to older customers and those who are immune compromised during the coronavirus shutdown.
It meant Carol Wymer was able to get her prescription filled quickly Monday morning and without having to wait.
And she hated it.
Wymer appreciates what Drug Mart is doing for her and other customers like her who are — wink, wink — 29 years old.
But she misses the hubbub of what daily life used to be before COVID-19 restrictions.
A self-described hugger, the 67-year-old retiree said she misses people and, yes, crowded aisles and lines at the checkout.
Fears over the coronavirus and the governor’s order to “stay at home” has shuttered businesses, schools and has banned all social gatherings.
Wymer’s trip to Drug Mart where the shelves were pretty much restocked with life’s necessities from bread and even some rolls of toilet paper was a welcome respite from her apartment in the William Presser Tower.
She’s kept in contact by phone with her family and her dad who is 94 years old, but social visits with other residents have been put on hold.
“Dad’s getting annoyed with me on the phone because I talk too much and he can’t hear,” she said with a laugh.
She’s not sure but her roommates Bonnie and Clyde — a pair of parakeets — might also be tired of her idle chatter.
“I’m sick of being stuck in my apartment,” she said. “I love to talk with people. I’m tired of just talking with my birds.”
From her perch on the seventh floor, Wymer said, she has a bird’s eye view of typically busy Canton Road and the once bustling Eastgate Ellet Plaza.
Even that’s empty now as most of the businesses there are closed because of the virus.
“It’s just too scary,” she said. “There’s no people around. It’s like a scary movie on TV.”
