The New York Mets couldn’t take the heat.
And in typical Mets fashion, they succumbed to the pressure.
They could have easily retained Carlos Beltran.

They could have stood behind their man. Instead, they meekly bowed down and ousted Beltran before he managed his first game.
No, check that.
The parties "mutually agreed to part ways"
Sorry, now they're lying.
Beltran, according to one of his closest friends, had no intention to step down. He told the Mets he could get through this. He persevered 20 years in the major leagues, handling all of the ups and downs, so he certainly could handle this storm.
The Mets wouldn’t let him, and told him he needed to go, afraid of the backlash his presence might draw.
Once the Mets hire Beltran’s replacement – perhaps Eduardo Perez, runner-up to Beltran in the managerial derby, or bench coach Hensley Meulens, they will have will have the distinction of paying three managers simultaneously.
Only in Queens.
Beltran, one of the most respected players and clubhouse leaders in the game during his career, certainly proved he wasn’t a saint. He was part of the Houston Astros’ electronic sign stealing in his final year as a player in 2017.
He also was still a player.
And every player interviewed during MLB’s investigation was told they would have complete immunity if they were truthful.
The nine-page MLB investigative report included only one player.
Beltran.
“Approximately two months into the 2017 season, a group of players, including Carlos Beltran, discussed that the team could improve on decoding opposing teams’ signs and communicating the signs to the batter,” according to commissioner Rob Manfred’s report.
Well, if every player, coach, manager or executive were fired every time they lied in baseball, there would be no game.
Who knows, maybe Beltran lied to the Mets too, if they asked him about it during their job interviews.
Most likely, they never asked.
Besides, wasn’t it during Beltran’s press conference that Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen raved about how much they trusted him?
“It was important for all of us in the ownership group and the baseball operations department,’’ Van Wagenen said, “to feel like we could exhale when we walked into the manager’s office. …
“We wanted to feel comfortable, we wanted to feel welcome and we wanted to feel in partnership with the manager. We can trust Carlos, and that goes a long way.”
Well, that trust lasted all of 72 days.
The Mets apparently felt there would be a credibility problem. Maybe they thought the pitchers who faced the Astros in 2017 would have lingering resentment. Perhaps wary of reaction from opposing fans.
Or maybe they felt that since A.J. Hinch was fired by the Astros and Cora by the Red Sox, it was only right that Beltran be fired, too.
The difference is that if Hinch wasn’t suspended, he’d still be managing the Astros.
If Cora wasn’t under investigation for allegations while with the Red Sox, and simply was going to be suspended for violations as the Astros bench coach, maybe he isn’t cast aside.
The Mets had a choice. They could have saved Beltran.
Instead, they folded.
Forget about whether the Mets trusting their next manager. How will the next manager trust the Mets?
