Committees with Stepping Up and the Women’s Equality Centennial Celebration initially planned a luncheon for Wednesday with Dr. Mae Jemison set to be the guest speaker. Unfortunately, because of rising of rising COVID-19 numbers, the luncheon was delayed until conditions improved.
Sheila Huff, a chairperson of the Women’s Equality Day Committee, spoke to those in attendance about the importance of celebrating this milestone for women, and shine a light on the continuing need for leveling the playing field for women.
”We’re trying to break that ceiling and get women involved,” Huff said. “We really want to get more women involved in politics and government.”
The food and cookies that were ordered for the cancelled luncheon will be donated to local women, homeless shelters and schools.
In Owensboro, another celebration took place Wednesday in the form of a march. City officials dedicated a memorial for Louise Gasser Kirtley, who was the first woman to practice law in Owensboro.
“You know, everyone is always talking about freedoms and the fight for them,” Jeanie Owen Miller, treasurer for the Daviess County Bar Association said. “This is probably one of the most important freedoms, especially for women, and that’s the right to vote.”
The keynote speaker was Marcia Milby Ridings, the first female president of the Kentucky Bar Association.
Even organizers say this is an event they want to continue every year.
