The San Diego Padres' star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. made his first career start in right field Sunday after he was reinstated off of the 10-day injured list ahead of the team's game against Arizona.
Tatis hasn't played since being placed on the IL with left shoulder inflammation following an early exit in a game against the Rockies on July 30. The Padres have been planning to move Tatis to the outfield in an effort to keep him on the field, and multiple people within the organization told The Athletic that Tatis met the idea positively.
In his first at-bat in his return to the lineup against the Diamondbacks, Tatis doubled down the left-field line.
The 22-year-old National League MVP candidate is slashing .292/.373/.651 with 31 home runs, 70 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 87 games this season. He leads the NL in home runs and steals.
