SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) —
Critical Race Theory has grabbed all the headlines on the rights of parents to influence what’s taught in school, but Beyond the Books hasn’t found any evidence of CRT being taught in Utah.
Meanwhile, a conservative club called Turning Point USA claims to have chapters in 16 Utah high schools and all the major college campuses. According to its online media, it is anti-vaccine mandates, pro-gun rights, and believe America is in a “moral decline,” blaming “woke culture” and Hollywood.
Its founder, Charlie Kirk, recently described U.S. gymnast Simone Biles as a “selfish sociopath,” and a disgrace to America, after she dropped out of several Olympic competitions due to safety and mental health concerns.
That’s just one example of actions that disturb Utah activist and author Darlene McDonald.
“When we have parents who are concerned about indoctrination in high schools, this is what they need to be concerned about, ”McDonald said.
Both the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center, two national organizations that monitor extremism, list TPUSA as a hate group and have documented numerous cases of their members engaged in racism, bigotry, and white nationalism.
Alex Marlow, a Breitbart editor who spoke at a 2020 Student Action Summit, said that rape accusations are just women experiencing "regrettable sex."
Current and former leaders of TPUSA have been caught sending racists texts, like one from a former TPUSA field director who allegedly wrote:
i [sic] hate black people.
Like f--- them all
I hate blacks. End of story.
TPUSA spokeswoman Candace Owens recently was criticized for seemingly pro-Hitler comments. Another TPUSA leader, in 2019, was blasted for allegedly saying, “The only thing the Nazis didn’t get right is they didn’t keep going."
Utah lawmakers like Rep. Steve Christiansen want to ban CRT in K-12 schools. Meanwhile, TPUSA is actively expanding into the classroom, recently advertising a new curriculum called Turning Point Academy.
McDonald, the activist, said if CRT is worth a ban, TPUSA at least deserves an examination by lawmakers at the Utah Capitol.
But just as she disagrees with a ban on CRT, McDonald wouldn’t ban TPUSA, either.
“Your racism can't trample on my civil rights,” she says. “But you have the right to be racist."
