Regarding “Letter from the Editor: Writing to a newspaper is an inherently public act,” Aug. 8: Everyone – even judges – have the right to an opinion and the right to civilly express it. There is nothing written that says you must give up all opinions when you become a judge, like Judge Eric Bergstrom, or a schoolteacher, like I was. You must exercise constant diligence to make sure your actions are not being influenced by your opinions, but that does not mean you cannot have them.
As to the content of his statement, I generally agree that The Oregonian/OregonLive has been too harsh on a group of people who are generally trying to a good job with insufficient tools and manpower. Are there bad police officers in Portland? Sure, just like there are bad teachers and bad newspaper reporters. From where I sit down here in Linn County, it seems to me that The Oregonian/OregonLive is using an overly broad brush of condemnation on Portland Police.
I do not know Judge Bergstrom at all, but I would like to think that if one of the protesters had been slated to appear before him, he would act honorably and recuse himself if he felt he could not do his job with the impartiality we expect.
