Giants' Anthony DeSclafani leaves with right ankle discomfort - NBC Sports Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants' diminished rotation took another hit in the early innings Wednesday at Oracle Park.

Anthony DeSclafani was pulled after recording just four outs because of right ankle discomfort. After DeSclafani looked uncomfortable covering first base for the first out of the second inning, Giants trainer Dave Groeschner and manager Gabe Kapler came out to check on him.

The right-hander was taken back to the clubhouse after a short conversation.

DeSclafani hopped after getting to first and appeared to be favoring his right leg. He also appeared to be having issues when he got an inning-ending strikeout in the first. He hopped off the mound awkwardly after that one, too. DeSclafani's final pitch was a 90.7 mph fastball that caught the attention of the Giants' dugout.

The Giants are already without Johnny Cueto (flexor strain) although he is doing well in his rehab and could return soon. They had planned to skip the fifth spot in their rotation because of Thursday's off day. They also have an off day on Monday, so they are well-positioned in the short term, but any lengthy absence would be a blow. DeSclafani entered the day with a 3.29 ERA.

Left-hander Sammy Long is the next man up in Triple-A, with veterans Scott Kazmir, Tyler Chatwood, Logan Ondrusek and Matt Shoemaker also possibly in the mix to cover innings.
