Barbe took advantage of the B.S. Walker Relays’ temporary move to its home track on Friday, sweeping the team titles and three of four top individual awards.
Sulphur’s track was unavailable because the new lighting system installed after Hurricane Laura damage was still in the process of being installed.
“I thought everybody stepped up and really improved,” Barbe boys track coach Ben Beasley said. “We had a lot of personal bests out there today.
“We had some guys that had to be called up from the sideline per se because of injuries and things like that. Everybody ran their hardest.”
The Barbe boys scored 169 points, while Sam Houston was second with 102. On the girls side, Barbe scored more than 10 points in 15 events and racked up 217 points, while District 3-5A rival Sulphur was second with 132 points.
“It is definitely a team effort this year,” Barbe girls track coach Steven Richard said. “We have seniors in the field, and on the track they are very young with a lot of freshmen.
“They have been working really hard and getting better each week. It is coming together, and tonight it showed.”
Jamaal Levi was one of those who set personal bests. Against the area’s top sprinter in Sulphur’s Kaden Blalock, Levi won the 100- and 200-meter dash and boys outstanding track award. He beat Blalock by .11 seconds in the 100 at 11.03 seconds and more than two-tenths in the 200 with a time of 22.21. Levi also helped the Bucs win the 4×100-meter relay (43.68).
“It was a really good performance by Jamaal,” Beasley said.
Seniors Ariel Williams and Zaetayi Nickerson-Lomax led the way for the Barbe girls, winning the outstanding field and track awards.
Williams won the long jump (17-11/2) and high jump, while Nickerson-Lomax dominated on the track. She won the 100 (12.41) and 200 (25.95), posting the second-best times in the area. She helped the Bucs to wins in the 4×100 and 4×200.
Westlake’s Tristan Goodly set personal-best marks again in the long and triple jumps. He moved up to No. 6 in the state in the long jump at 23 feet and hit 47 feet in the triple jump for No. 3 statewide.
Barbe’s Joseph posted the top mark (4:35.74) in Southwest Louisiana in the 1,600 run.
