The defending NBA champion Bucks — presented with title rings moments before the opening game of the 2021-22 season — continued right where they left off in a dominant 127-104 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday in Milwaukee. The Bucks also raised their championship banner at Fiserv Forum prior to tip, with coach Mike Budenholzer calling it a "special night."
"It was a lot of ups and downs for me," Giannis Antetokounmpo said of the pregame ceremony. "I teared up a bit, but happy seeing everybody happy. … The banner is always going to be there. We're a part of history."
Antetokounmpo led the way Tuesday with 32 points on 12-of-25 shooting, 14 rebounds and seven assists. Five other Bucks ended the game with double-digit scoring, including Khris Middleton and Pat Connaughton, who had 20 points each. Kevin Durant added 32 of his own in the Nets loss.
“Once the ceremony was over we were able to focus on our game plan and ourselves and we were able to get the win,” Antetokounmpo said.
It wasn’t all positive for Milwaukee, as guard Jrue Holiday left with a right heel contusion in the second quarter and did not return. Holiday, one of the NBA's best two-way guards, had 12 points, an assist and a steal before leaving. Budenholzer said after the game that Holiday had an MRI and the results had come back "clean."
