LACEY, Wash. – Goals and chances were hard to come by throughout as the Western Oregon University soccer team tallied four shots in each period, but weren't able to land one in the net with Saint Martin's taking the 1-0 victory Thursday afternoon.

WOU (1-2) posted eight total shots, with one on goal. SMU (1-3) ended up with 10 shots and five on goal. Morgan Mihelich stood tall in goal for the Wolves as the freshman, making her second straight start, ended up with four saves and played the entire game.

Hannah Cabral had the first chance for the Wolves in the eighth minute taking a shot from the middle of the box that was saved. Alyssa Tomasini generated a couple of chances near the midway point of the half as a shot in the 19th minute sailed just right and in the 25th minute missed just left. Right before the half, Gabby Pulliam had a shot from in the box that was blocked.

Saint Martin's had a few shots miss high early on before Mihelich was able to come through with a couple of saves from the midpoint of the box to keep the game scoreless at the half.

Tomasini nearly tied the game in the early parts of the second half when she had a look near the front, but the shot just sailed high. Chloe Smith took a deep shot from the top of the box that missed just left in the 56th minute.

The Saints countered that rush and were able to record the only goal of the game. Payton Aselton found Kiersten Madsen off a corner kick who scored on a header in the 59th minute for a 1-0 lead. Madsen also had both goals for Saint Martin's last week at WOU.

Saint Martin's kept the pressure coming generating several more chances before WOU made a late push in the closing minutes.

Able to force a couple of corner kick chances, the Wolves got a shot from Lilly Nowatzke that just missed right in the 82nd minute and then Nowatzke had one more try in the 87th minute that sailed high to leave Saint Martin's with the 1-0 victory.

Tomasini led the Wolves with three shots, while Nowatzke had two and then one each from Cabral, Smith and Pulliam.

Madsen led SMU with four shots, with the only one on net being the game-winning goal. Aselton and Melissa Rivas added two shots apiece, each putting one shot on goal.

Ali Campigotto started and played the entire game in net for the Saints picked up the win making one save.

WOU will remain on the road as they will play at Northwest Nazarene this coming Monday (Mar. 29) starting at 3 p.m. (Pacific).
