MERCER COUNTY, NJ -- Caring for a loved family member is a personal for Beth Shalom, owner of Right At Home senior care services. Her mother spent 35 years working in a nursing home, and she spent most of her life working as a lawyer for the elderly and handicapped. After her family experienced the challenges of making sure their loved ones had access to the care they needed, she wanted to help others by providing personalized home care service for their moms, dads, grandparents, and children.
After serving countless families in Monmouth and Middlesex Counties, Shalom is now expanding her Right At Home senior care services to Mercer County residents “wherever they call home” at their private residence or in a staffed facility.
“Our patients are someone’s daughter, father, or grandparent. We want to give them the best life,” said Shalom. “Our care is so far beyond services to care for individuals who have had a long life. We are given the gift of being a part of their life.”
Whether it’s caring for those with dementia, medical nursing needs, or companionship, Right At Home personalizes their services to the preferences of the patient and their families for part or full-time care. Approximately half of the Right at Home care staff live with their patients or provide overnight care.
They have even begun to provide “quarantine care” for patients who may need to quarantine for the suggested 14 days after a potential exposure to the virus.
“With direct client care, we can’t add years to your life, but we can add life to your years,” said Shalom. “Our caregivers often become part of the family. And we work to keep our clients in their homes as long as possible with everything they need.”
With the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the staff at Right At Home are taking all the necessary precautions. They are wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including masks and gloves when taking care of patients. For families who worry about potential exposure to the virus, the agency is encouraging live-in care professionals.
The agency put in place their own “COVID competent action plan” given the lack of home care guidelines from the State. Staff also is regularly tested for the coronavirus.
Throughout the pandemic, Shalom has used technology to stay connected with her clients through regular Zoom calls, coffee talks, and virtual tours to let them know they are there for all their caregiving needs.
Right at Home also works to give back to the community through supporting charitable organizations and non-profits that benefit mental health services, Alzheimer’s Disease awareness and others. Shalom also is working to establish an “adopt a grandparent” program to connect people of different generations to learn from one another. She believes that it’s important “to make an impact in the community.”
