The A’s designated right-hander Daniel Mengden for assignment Sunday after reinstating him from the COVID-19 related injury list, the team announced.
Mengden, 27, pitched for the A’s for parts of the last five seasons and was 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA in four outings this year as a spot-starter and middle reliever. He was placed on the COVID-19 injury list Sept. 3 after he tested positive for the coronavirus in Houston on an A’s road trip the previous week.
After receiving Mengden’s positive result Aug. 29, the A’s said nobody on the team had violated MLB health protocols and no other Oakland players or staff tested positive for the virus. Mengden was cleared to resume working out at the A’s alternate site in San Jose on Friday and A’s head trainer Nick Paparesta said Mengden was “asymptomatic throughout this entire process” before being cleared.
“Sometimes you make transactions this time of year and that was one of them,” manager Bob Melvin said Sunday of releasing Mengden. “We wish him the best. He’s been with us for a while. My guess is he’ll get picked up pretty quickly.”
Overall, Mengden was 17-20 with a 4.64 ERA in 60 games, including 48 starts, with the A’s since 2016.
Pinder update: Utility player Chad Pinder (right hamstring strain) resumed baseball activities two days ago. Melvin said Pinder, who was injured Sept. 12, is doing some light running and swings in the cage and playing catch, but that hamstring injuries can be “tricky.”
“Certainly, we’d like to get him back sooner than later,” Melvin said. “But you don’t want to reinjure something like that, because that would be a significant amount of time.”
The A’s are hoping to have Pinder available for the playoffs. Melvin said it’s unclear if Pinder might be able to play in the final week of the season. “It’s tough to go straight into the postseason,” Melvin said. “But it’s all going to be determined on how he feels from day to day.”
Briefly: Frankie Montas will start Tuesday’s series opener against the Dodgers in Los Angeles followed by Sean Manaea and Mike Fiers, Melvin said. Montas was reinstated from the paternity list Friday. Melvin said the A’s wanted Montas, who last pitched Sept. 13 at Texas, to play catch one day and throw a bullpen before making his next start. ... Second baseman Tony Kemp was presented with the Bill Rigney “Good Guy” award from the Bay Area chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for outstanding cooperatio with media.
