CHICAGO — Another 30 people were reported to have died from coronavirus during the past day in Illinois.

Among the victims were six people in Cook County, including a woman in her 30s. At least 8,486 people have died from COVID-19 across Illinois.

Another 1,531 cases were reported, as well, bringing the total number of confirmed cases up to 277,266 in Illinois. The state’s positivity rate held at 3.5 percent.

As of Monday night, 1,455 people were hospitalized with coronavirus in Illinois, including 367 people in the ICU and 153 people using ventilators.

In Chicago, an average of 287 new cases are being reported and three people dying per day. The city’s positivity rate was at 4.6 percent.

The city is seeing improvement in the number of new cases it’s reporting, said Dr. Allison Arwady, head of the Chicago Department of Public Health, during a Tuesday press conference. In mid-August, Chicago hit a new peak where it was seeing more than 350 new cases per day, but that’s fallen since then.

“Overall, we are headed in the right direction,” Arwady said.

At least 2,933 people have died of coronavirus in Chicago and there have been 77,500 confirmed cases.

Arwady again reminded Chicagoans to get a flu shot, saying it will be more important than ever this year so the city’s health care system isn’t stretched by having to battle a flu epidemic during the coronavirus pandemic.

Almost everyone 6 months or older should get a flu shot, Arwady said, but people 2 and younger and 65 and older are the most likely to suffer death or severe illness from the flu.

People should get shots through their primary doctor, if possible, so they can also do checkups with their doctors and ensure they’re healthy as Chicago heads into the fall and winter.

“Everything we can do to keep our flu outbreak smaller this winter helps preserve that space” for COVID, Arwady said.
