Ross: Bryant is 'on the right path' in injury recovery - Comcast SportsNet Chicago

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is scheduled for a light workout day at Wrigley Field on Saturday. Placed on the 10-day injured list last week, he remains day-to-day with a sprained left ring finger and a left wrist injury that required an injection last week.

“Every day we're adjusting,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “We're listening to him and seeing how things are going. So, he's on the right path. We continue to try to get him at-bats as much as we can, up until we all feel that he's ready to come off (the IL).”

Bryant and outfielder Steven Souza Jr. (right hamstring strain) each had five at-bats at the Cubs' South Bend alternate site on Friday. To ease the burden of travel from Chicago, coaches met them at Wrigley on Saturday.

Both players are eligible to return from the IL whenever they are cleared to play. Bryant and Souza have both missed just shy of two weeks for their respective injuries.

Tyler Chatwood will start the Cubs series finale against the Reds on Sunday, manager David Ross announced Saturday.

Chatwood returned from the injured list (mid-back strain) on Tuesday and struggled with his command against the Tigers. The right-hander pitched 1 1/3 innings, walking five while allowing three hits and two earned runs.

Tuesday was Chatwood’s first start since Aug. 6, when he was roughed up against the Royals (2 1/3 IP 11 hits, eight earned runs). He was good his first two outings, allowing a single earned run in 12 2/3 innings.

“Tyler’s thrown the ball well and a bad outing is no concern to just take him out of the rotation,” Ross said. “I think him coming back and trying to find his sharpness — we need Chatty to be good.

“We’ll continue to assess as we move along.”

José Quintana also returned from the IL on Tuesday and pitched three solid innings before tiring in his fourth. His role going forward is to be determined. Cubs catcher Willson Contreras said Wednesday he personally thinks Quintana needs another outing or two before starting to build up his arm strength.

"He looked good to me, he looked really good," Contreras said. "It's just the process to build the arm strength again as a starter. The first week when [the season] started were all kind of short starts [by the Cubs rotation]. But they've been going a little longer, so that's something that they have to work on."

The Cubs recalled right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay as their 29th man for Saturday’s doubleheader at Cincinnati.

This is the second time the Cubs have brought him up from the alternate site to bolster the pitching staff for a doubleheader – clubs are allowed an extra active player for doubleheaders, per the 2020 operations manual.

Last time, Alzolay made his 2020 debut in a start against the Cardinals, allowing just one unearned run and two hits in five innings. This time, the Cubs have two other pitchers penciled in to start Saturday: Yu Darvish and Alec Mills. Both are regular members of the Cubs starting rotation.

"He pitched well for us," Cubs manager David Ross said of Alzolay. "It's on a day that that he could be scheduled to pitch anyways. It just made a lot of sense from a lot of different angles. And then it'd be nice to take a look at him out of the bullpen if we get that opportunity."

The Cubs' two games Saturday are only seven innings apiece, but if needed he could pitch multiple innings, giving the rest of the bullpen a break in the midst of a packed weekend schedule.
