Right-hander Jesus Tinoco, one of the players included in the Rockies’ 2015 trade for Troy Tulowitzki, has been traded to the Miami Marlins for right-handed reliever Chad Smith.
The Marlins announced the deal late Thursday night. Tinoco will join the Marlins’ player pool.
Tinoco, 25, made his major league debut with the Rockies last season, making 24 appearances out of the bullpen. He was 0-3 with an ERA of 4.75 in 36 1/3 innings pitched and posted a WHIP of 1.611. He averaged 5.5 walks per nine innings vs. just 7.0 strikeouts per nine.
Smith, 25, was an 11th-round pick for the Marlins in 2016 but has not pitched above Double-A yet. Over 149 1/3 innings in the minors, he’s posted a 4.46 ERA, averaging 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings and 4.3 walks per nine. He’s struggled with his control over the past two seasons.
Smith was selected by the Marlins out of the University of Mississippi in the 11th round of the 2016 draft.
The Rockies acquired Tinoco from Toronto in July 2015, along with shortstop Jose Reyes, right-hander Jeff Hoffman and right-hander Miguel Castro in exchange for Tulowitzki and veteran right-hander LaTroy Hawkins. Hoffman, currently working out of Colorado’s bullpen, is the only player from the mega-deal still on the Rockies’ roster.
