Q: My husband, granddaughter and I were traveling Interstate 680 using the carpool lane. The signage said FasTrak, and another sign said HOV 3 or more. We don’t have FasTrak because we don’t travel those roads frequently. We were three in the car but got a ticket in the mail. Isn’t there carpool access anymore?

Carole deCordova

A: Yes, there is. But you need FasTrak transponder to use the carpool/express lanes. You may not use it often, but you’ll be glad you got one when you have it. Carpools and other eligible vehicles travel toll-free or pay half-price tolls. Solo drivers pay full tolls.

Q: My FasTrak transponder slips off the windshield more than it should. When will better ones be available?

Susan H., Berkeley

The adjustable FasTrak Flex transponder. (Metropolitan Transportation Commission)

A: Not sure, but an app company in Southern California is offering another option for FasTrak service that enables you to get rid of the transponder.

The state is giving drivers the green light to pay tolls using the Uproad app. Drivers can use it on their mobile devices on toll roads and bridges in California.

Drivers download the free app and sign up for the service, then use their mobile devices to pay as they go on most toll roads and bridges. Uproad lets them manage their account on various tolls roads and bridges, all in one place.

Bay Area officials don’t know how much the app has been used in this area, or how users feel about it, so stay tuned.

Q: Does the CHP have plans to slow down traffic on Highway 4 between Antioch and Pittsburg? I travel this highway every Saturday and the average speed of other vehicles is about 75 mph, and then you add in the racers who exceed 90 mph and are changing lanes rapidly, endangering other drivers.

I drive a little over 65 mph in the lane farthest to the right to try to stay out of their way, but still encounter high-speed drivers dodging in and out of my lane.

CHP patrols are hardly ever present, and drivers seem to believe that there is no reason to slow down. If CHP is not going to patrol this area, then I would suggest that they install speed cameras and start ticketing speeders so that law-abiding citizens can feel safe again. Could this ever happen?

Jerry Marsh, Rio Vista

A: Highway 4 is perhaps the most feared in the Bay Area. Too much traffic, going way too fast. Last Friday night, two men were killed on Highway 4 in Brentwood in a solo vehicle crash. It isn’t yet clear what caused this crash. Look for CHP to be out patrolling more often in this area.
