Vol fans often say that despite the recent rough years its football program has had, Tennessee still recruits itself. Even with the crazy coaching carousel of the last decade, UT as a brand continues to carry serious weight in the college football world.
But according to a ranking posted this week by 247Sports, their outlet believes that the Big Orange is nowhere near the force that it used to be. 247 ranked “College football’s 25 biggest brands in 2022”, and unsurprisingly Tennessee made the list but some of the programs that the Vols are listed behind in the ranking may surprise (or even insult) you.
247 named UT the No. 18 most powerful brand in college football. This may not seem crazy at first because of how much the Vols have struggled in the recent past, but scroll down a bit further and you’ll see that schools like Ole Miss sit at No. 15 and perhaps most offensive, North Carolina is four spots ahead of Tennessee at No. 14. NORTH CAROLINA?!
UNC went 6-7 last year and struggles to sell out a stadium that is literally half the size of Neyland Stadium. I mean, we’re not talking about basketball here, folks. Sure, the Tar Heels have an advantage as a brand on the hardwood but ranking them that high in football is completely nonsensical.

As for the rest of the list, I would have a much harder time arguing that Tennessee is a bigger brand than most of the schools listed. For example, Florida comes in at No. 11, LSU at No. 6, and as you might have guessed, Alabama is No. 1. Those placements make a decent amount of sense but I still think we may need to check to see if the guy that made this ranking is on some kind illegal drugs.
