A total of five ties have resulted since the National Football League further updated its overtime rules in 2017.
The Detroit Lions have been involved in two of these draws, with the most recent of these taking place Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Oddly enough, this was also the second instance during the past four seasons that saw the Steelers draw level with an opponent following 60 minutes and an overtime period.
Hindsight is always 20/20, but this one had all the signs of a truly mediocre display long before a ball was ever placed on the tee.
Fans were still making their way into Heinz Field when ushers began asking: “Are you sure?” after each ticket they scanned.
OK, so I’m obviously throwing a little bit of sarcasm to the mix, but the sentiment is still true.
On one hand, you had the league’s only winless team and, on the other hand, you had a middle-of-the-pack squad without its quarterback and best player.
You can’t even be disappointed when your expectations are already so historically low.
Going back and watching some of the highlights and analysis from the contest, it seriously looks like both sides had some kind of unspoken pregame agreement to not win.
I’ve never seen two teams work so hard to not come out on top.
Neither team deserved to win, but if it had somehow ended as a loss for both Detroit and Pittsburgh, that would have probably been a fitting result.
In my opinion, this tie will be a blip on the campaign for the Steelers but, for most Lions fans, I think a tie has a sting similar to the one brought about by a defeat.
With the way things have gone for the Lions this season, I really don’t know if a tie is good, bad or indifferent.
All of the jokes and sarcastic memes about the team have already been circulating the internet since the game’s result went final 48 hours ago.
To be honest, the jokes kind of write themselves at this point, but I think most people are almost tired of making them.
It has been easy for people to say: “Well, at least they didn’t lose,” or “That’s two weeks undefeated in-a-row,” knowing last week was a bye.
The best way to prevent people from making countless Lions’ puns is to score more points than the other team.
Even so, bagging one victory after the hole they’ve dug themselves in three months into the season might only push them into mediocre status.
There’s just something about “1” at the end of a record that looks equally disastrous as 16 losses occupying the column immediately next to it.
