Rays expect new reliever J.P Feyereisen to pitch in right away - Tampa Bay Times

DUNEDIN — The Rays expect to get help now and later from J.P Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen, the two right-handed relievers acquired from the Brewers Friday in exchange for shortstop Willy Adames and pitcher Trevor Richards.

Feyereisen (FIRE-rye-zehn), expected to join the Rays Saturday, was 0-2, 3.36 in 21 appearances for the Brewers, starting the season with a 17-game streak of not allowing an earned run.

The combination of a somewhat pedestrian 93.5 mph fastball, slider and changeup has been effective, and intriguing to the Rays, who project the 28-year-old rookie to handle high-leverage, late-inning work.

“J.P. is going to step into a role with our major league team here quickly and, we believe, is going to show that,” Rays general manager Erik Neander said. “Really excited about the way he’s taken off and believe that he’s close to another gear or two upon getting here.”

Rasmussen, who is heading to Triple-A Durham, was a first-round draft pick by the Rays in 2017, 31st overall, out of Oregon State but didn’t sign as he instead needed a second Tommy John elbow surgery. He was drafted by the Brewers in 2018 in the sixth round, made his big-league debut in 2020 and is 0-1, 4.24 this season with 25 strikeouts in 17 innings. He has averaged 97.1 mph on his fastball.

“We’re going to get to know him a little bit better, how he responds, how he bounces back,” Neander said. “As a two-time Tommy John, want to make sure that we have everything dialed in with him before we get him into our mix with our major-league club. But plenty excited to add his talent as well.”

Honeywell back

Before the trade, the big news of the day was that the Rays had called up reliever Brent Honeywell for his third stint in the majors. How long Honeywell stays is not clear, as Michael Wacha is expected to come off the injured list this weekend. Honeywell, who returned to game action for the first time since 2017 due to a series of elbow injuries, made three previous appearances for the Rays, compiling an 8.31 ERA.

Miscellany

• The Rays played with a 24-man roster Friday, two under the limit following the afternoon trade of Adames and Richards.

• Lefty Shane McClanahan starts for the Rays on Saturday night, coming off a 5-1/3-inning outing last Saturday against the Mets that resulted in his first career win.

• Dunedin’s TD Ballpark was the third different venue the Rays have visited to play the Blue Jays. They faced them Sept. 27-29, 2019 in Toronto, Aug. 14-16, 2020 in Buffalo, N.Y., then four games here.
