Retail chains, corporate office managers, and state and local governments are trying to interpret new federal guidelines that say vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks or socially distance in most indoor and outdoor settings, causing confusion that health experts scrambled to clarify.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told NBC on Sunday that rather than everybody ripping off their masks immediately, “work at your own speed, work with your own family and your own businesses to remove them when necessary.”
States including California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York say everyone must continue to wear masks. They are also required to ride buses, trains, boats, airplanes and to be in schools at least through the end of the school year, the CDC said.
Walmart, Costco, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s, Publix and Starbucks have all updated their mask policies to follow CDC recommendations unless state or local governments say otherwise. Masks are still required at Apple, CVS, Home Depot, Kroger, Macy’s, Meijer, Target, Walgreens, and Winn-Dixie.
Drugmaker Eli Lilly will bring back 25% of its office workers to its Indianapolis headquarters on June 1, but only if vaccinated, and require masks and social distancing through July 12. “Recent guidance from the CDC supports our current policy,” a spokesman said.
Starting Monday, Delta Air Lines said all new employees must be vaccinated unless they qualify for an exemption. Current employees aren’t required to be vaccinated, but CEO Ed Bastion told CNN that those who aren’t might not be allowed on international flights.
