Broncos Position Outlook: Starting five solidified, but drafting future right tackle makes sense - The Denver Post

ciloklinggar.blogspot.com

Fourth in a series looking at each Broncos position group heading into the NFL draft:

2020 review: The Broncos rolled through five starting combinations and only C Lloyd Cushenberry and LG Dalton Risner started every game. … Cushenberry, a third-round pick, played all 1,075 offensive snaps and allowed only four pass-rush “disruptions” in the season’s second half. … LT Garett Bolles had a breakout season (half-sack allowed), earning second-team All-Pro recognition and he signed a four-year, $68 million contract last November that carries him through his age-32 season. … RG Graham Glasgow, the 2020 big free-agent acquisition, missed time with an ankle injury and coronavirus. … As a team, the Broncos allowed 32 sacks and nine were in one game (Week 2 loss at Pittsburgh).

In-house offseason moves: Re-signed exclusive-rights free agents Austin Schlottmann and Calvin Anderson to one-year contracts.

Additions: None.

Departures: Right tackle Elijah Wilkinson signed with the Chicago Bears and right tackle Demar Dotson remains a free agent.

Under contract: Bolles (LT), Risner (LG), Cushenberry (C), Glasgow (RG), Schlottmann (G), Anderson (T), Ja’Wuan James (RT), Netane Muti (G), Patrick Morris (C) and Quinn Bailey (OT).

Outlook: James, who opted out of the 2020 season, is back in the Denver area and the Broncos are counting on him to stay healthy — a big ask, but his contract justifies giving him a chance this year.

Including James, the Broncos’ Week 1 offensive line should be set with Bolles, Risner, Cushenberry and Glasgow.

The Broncos should feel comfortable with their starting five, but slightly less so with their depth. Who plays right tackle if James breaks down? Anderson has support within the organization, but he’s a left tackle by trade. Who plays center if Cushenberry gets nicked up? At least they’re OK at backup guard with Muti.

Need scale (1-10) – 5. A right tackle of the future (like, 2022) could be in the offing after the first round. The Broncos have 11 linemen under contract; in 2019, when the roster was at 90 players to open camp, they had 16 linemen on-board, so expect additions via the draft and/or rookie free agency.

Wednesday: Defensive line.

Previous position outlooks: Linebackers | Defensive backs | Tight ends.
