Mounting a theatrical production is complicated enough with one actor in the lead role. Stage Right is tripling the challenge by casting three Annies in an upcoming online production of the beloved Broadway staple.
“Annie” is scheduled to stream nightly from Nov. 27 to 29 through the Showtix4u live-stream service. Each night’s stream will feature a different actor playing Annie, along with a separate set of named orphans for each one. Other main characters and ensemble members will appear in all three versions.
The process involves filming the show three times over the course of two weeks in the Westmoreland County Community College Science Hall Theater, said director and Stage Right founder Tony Marino.
The Broadway classic, based on the comic strip “Little Orphan Annie,” has been made available to theater companies to film and live-stream into homes, according to a release.
“It’s so important to be able to do these things safely, so with the ability to stream, we are able to rehearse and film small groups at a time and maintain social distancing,” Marino said. “It’s very cool, but weird as well — the whole cast will never be together at one time on one stage.”
During rehearsals, “We would have the orphan casts split up, no more than 15 in a room, and my dance captains and I would go from group to group choreographing and rehearsing each number,” said choreographer Renata Marino. “Then, they would be released for the night and the ensemble would come in and rehearse their stuff, and that’s how we had to work it in order to be safe.”
Three Annies
Portraying Annie will be Felice Hutchinson of Penn Township, Nov. 27; Samantha Seech of Penn Township, Nov. 28; and Magee Heverly of Greensburg, Nov. 29.
The show also features a small ensemble of local actors and Stage Right student actors. Adult cast members include John Noble as Daddy Warbucks, Kevin O’Leary as Rooster Hannigan, Katherine Harkins as Lily St. Regis, Courtney Harkins as Grace Farrell and Greg Keresten as Franklin Roosevelt.
The Marinos will perform the roles of Bert Healy and Miss Hannigan from a set in their basement, Tony Marino said, due to pandemic performance restrictions they face as members of Actor’s Equity Association.
“That’s theater in 2020,” he said. “Thank God, our home life is a musical anyway.”
“Annie” also will be included in Stage Right’s upcoming “25 Days of Stage Right Christmas” online programming, Tony Marino said. Other offerings will include “Elf,” a “Night Before Christmas” children’s show and music from the Stage Right Sensations.
The price to watch “Annie” is $30 per household or $75 for group streaming.
“We ask that people use the honor system. This show is very expensive to produce and we want to be able to create theater moving forward,” the release said.
