A Mississippi hunter prayed for a chance to shoot a non-typical buck he had on camera and his prayers were answered with a buck bigger than anything he'd ever dreamed of encountering.
"I had pictures of him on camera at night," said R.P. Farr of West Point. "I had three different nights that I had pictures, maybe two weeks before I shot him.
"Another guy had a picture of him on Friday before I killed him. That's all the pictures we had. I didn't have any daytime pictures."
Farr wasn't sure how big the buck was, but he knew it had a lot of points. Because all the photos were at night, some hunters told Farr he'd never get a shot at him. However, with the peak of the rut approaching where he was hunting, Winston County, Farr thought he may get a chance.
No sighting during the day
"I was hunting that area for him for two weeks," Farr said. "I was hunting maybe 250 yards from the feeder where I got the pictures.
"I said, 'Lord, just give me a chance.' Every morning I went out there I said, 'Lord, at least give me a shot at him.'"
'It looked fake': It's only a 4-point, but you've probably never seen one like it

Despite his prayers, it appeared Farr wasn't going to cross paths with the non-typical giant. It also didn't appear anyone else would. Farr said he told a few friends about the buck and they weren't seeing him either.
"They took some grandkids down there with them thinking maybe they'd get one of them on him, but he never showed up," Farr said.
December 17 was looking good and Farr was seeing a lot of activity as the peak of the rut neared.
'I didn't have but a few seconds'
"I got out there before daylight," Farr said. "It was a good morning. I'd seen several small bucks."
Farr had seen 11 bucks and does from his stand on a narrow food plot.
"It was a lane," Farr said. "It was like an old field road.
"It's probably 30 yards wide. I bet it may even be 20 to 25 yards wide. I had some wheat planted on that and I was hunting that."

Farr watched a doe cross the food plot and disappear. That's when the buck he'd prayed about stepped into view.
"I was looking the other way," Farr said. "He came out behind her trotting across.
"I knew it was him because I saw all the kickers. I didn't have but a few seconds to shoot with him trotting."
He had no time to get nervous
He only had seconds, but they played out like a script written just for Farr.
"He just stopped and looked back in my direction," Farr said. "That's when I shot him. He dropped right there."
Had it not happened so fast, Farr said the outcome would have been different.
"The good thing was I didn't have time to get nervous," Farr said. "All I thought was, 'That's him and I got to shoot.'
"That's all the time I had. If he'd come out and just stood there I'd have never hit him. I usually get the shakes. You know how it is."
The buck was bigger than anyone thought
When he had the antlers in his hands, he began to realize what he'd shot.
"I didn't know what to think," Farr said. "I think my heart was about to bust out of my chest. He's the first one I ever killed that didn't have ground shrinkage."
Farr knew it was big, but he wasn't sure how big and friends tried to convince him to enter it in a big buck contest.
"I was thinking maybe 170," Farr said. "I had no idea how you'd score that deer.
"People were telling me to go enter him in that contest. Some guys said he'd score 190, but I didn't believe them."
As it turned out, both Farr and his friends were wrong. The buck had 24 points and gross-scored 201¼ inches.
"I've dreamed of a 150-inch, but I never thought I'd get a non-typical 200-inch," Farr said. "The main frame on him scored like 167. He would have been a main-frame 10, but he had a lot of points sticking off everywhere."
With over 200 inches of antler, Farr knows his buck is a once-in-a-lifetime harvest, but he's not letting that stop him from hunting in the future.
"This was my year for hunting," Farr said. "I'll never top him, but I'm going to try. There's always one bigger, I guess."
