To the editor:
I have given a lot of thought in writing this letter after seeing numerous comments made about Lenny Mirra that are false, half truths, and misinformation.
But the comments that got me to write this letter are about his stance on abortion.
Lenny is in favor of a woman’s right to access reproductive health care; he’s pro-choice. It’s important that as new communities are added to his district, his soon-to-be new constituents are not fed lies and distortions about his record as some have sought to do.

This past summer, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Lenny voted to codify the protections of Roe into Massachusetts law — an action he took with a bipartisan set of colleagues.
And that’s not all. He’s voted to repeal archaic state laws that imposed criminal penalties on abortion; he’s voted for legislation to repeal copays on FDA-approved birth control; and he’s supported budget appropriations for family planning services for those living in poverty.
For reasons beyond my understanding, some have tried to pretend that his record is somehow invalid — he’s been in office for many years, and his record is clear!
Nevertheless, some in town have claimed that Lenny’s single vote against a provision that allowed a 16-year-old girl to get an abortion without parental consent — a position well outside the mainstream of pro-choice activists — makes him evil or some crazy religious zealot.
If this portion of the bill was not in there, Lenny would have voted in favor. It’s no different than voting no a bill that is loaded with “pork.”
We have an obligation to give our candidates a fair shake, and it is so upsetting to see so many here in town stoop to lies and distortions in an effort to define Lenny before he is widely known.
What happened to taking the high road? We should reject the mudslinging of Washington and hear from each candidate on how they will help our community.
Lenny is a hardworking public servant, much like Charlie Baker and Bruce Tarr — both of whom have endorsed Lenny.
I have met Lenny twice now and have corresponded with him on issues. I believe in Lenny. I think he will do a good job and have our district’s best interest at heart.
