Buccaneers fans might hate the Saints and see this as one of the biggest games of the season out of the playoffs, but it isn’t a rivalry right now.
The past two years for the Buccaneers have been tons of highs against very few lows. The team plays well against almost every team in the league with two key exceptions; the Saints and the Rams.
Tampa hasn’t been able to beat either team in the regular season since Brady joined, and the Rams were even able to beat the Bucs in the post season to double up their opponent in 2021.
As for the Saints, this drought in the regular season means much more for the Bucs due to it coming against a division opponent and a hated “rival.”
Except, as the Buccaneers point out, it isn’t much of a rivalry right now;
Bucs fans won’t let anyone forget about the playoff win, which was the most important game by far, but the 0-4 record against the Saints in the regular season shows that there isn’t much of a rivalry here at the moment.
The Buccaneers have lost to all manner of backup quarterbacks, interim head coaches, and played four of their worst games over the last two years against their opponent from New Orleans. That team just appears to have Tampa figured out.
Could this be the season where that tide starts to turn? Perhaps. The Bucs started hot with a convincing win to beat the Cowboys while the Saints slipped by the Falcons, but history still tells us that penciling in this game as a win after only one week is not paying any attention to the past.
This game is going to be very tough for the Buccaneers, and they will need to play their best game in a while if they want to turn these games back into rivalry matchups.
