Mets' Carlos Carrasco 'trending right' after key rehab step - New York Post

Carlos Carrasco took a key step in his rehab process Saturday by taking a few steps up the mound — but not yet all the way to the top.

The Mets right-hander, who has not thrown a pitch this season because of a torn right hamstring, threw a side session from just below the rubber in the bullpen at Citi Field. It marked the latest bit of progress in a season marred by setbacks for Carrasco, who received a platelet-rich plasma injection on June 9 aimed at strengthening his hamstring.

“He’s trending right,” manager Luis Rojas said before the Mets hosted the Phillies. “His arm feels really good, his leg feels really good. But he’s going to start a progression and we’re going to start doing more and more of throwing on the slope.”

Rojas said it was Carrasco’s first time throwing off the edge of the slope “in a few weeks or even over a month.” The 34-year-old had only been throwing on flat ground in the days leading up to Saturday.

“The next step will probably be to keep climbing [to] the top of the slope and throw a regular side,” Rojas said.

Even after Carrasco graduates to throwing from the top of the mound, and then facing live hitters, he will need a rehab assignment to build himself up, which could keep him out until at least late July.

“Right now he’s strong with his legs, strong with his arm,” Rojas said. “Next week will be the full-tilt side where he’s going to test even more all the work that he’s put in the last two months, or month and a half since we brought him here.”

Rojas declined to name a starter for Sunday’s series finale. He was waiting to see how Marcus Stroman (left hip soreness) got through Saturday’s pregame work after throwing a side session Friday and feeling healthy.

“Either way, as of now, he’s going to have three starts before the All-Star break,” Rojas said.

Dellin Betances (right shoulder impingement) gave up three runs in one-third of an inning Friday at Triple-A Syracuse in the fifth game of his rehab assignment. But Rojas said the Mets have been focusing more on Betances’ health and mechanics instead of the results.

“His reads have been good from our perspective,” Rojas said. “We like the arm angle, we like the release point, we like the fastball where it is to what it was when he got on the IL the only outing he had in Philadelphia. That’s what we’re looking at, nothing more. … We are pleased.”

Rojas said Betances will begin throwing back-to-back games with Syracuse on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jeurys Familia (right hip impingement) will throw a bullpen session Sunday. He remains on track to come off the injured list when eligible on Thursday.
