Matt Nagy tends to be more upbeat and pleasant than many head coaches, but he hit his limit with the Bears’ offense after their 20-19 win over the Buccaneers.
Rather than roar about the team’s 4-1 start, Nagy unloaded on his offense for incorrectly run routes, poorly set blocks and missed opportunities by quarterback Nick Foles.
“It’s great to be 4-1 ... I thought offensively, just look at it, you start wondering about the sloppiness and where things are at and how to get to where we need to go,” Nagy said. “The details in this offense right now are not there. That’s our job as coaches to make sure that we get these freakin’ details right. It’s as simple as that.
“Until we get our details right on offense, we’re gonna continue to be this way.”
He continued when asked why this was the boiling point for him.
“It’s everything right now,” he said. “You need to do everything exactly the way that it’s supposed to be done. If that means run a route at five steps and not three steps, or if that means run a route at three steps and not seven steps, that has to happen. If it means to set a certain way and block somebody, that’s what that means. If it means to throw on a certain time with your feet, do that. If it means to make the right play call at the right time, then do that as coaches — meaning myself.
“I refuse to allow this to happen. Us as coaches, we’re gonna use the next couple days here to make sure that whatever we’re doing, we’re being the greatest teachers we can be. And on your end, as players, you better be the best students you can be. If you’re not, we’re gonna have to figure something out... Darn it, when you play in this offense, you better be freakin’ detailed. We’re not a detailed football team on offense right now and we need to get that back.”
Despite their sparkling record after upsetting the Bucs, the Bears are 26th in scoring (21 points per game), 27th in yards (323.2) and dead last in third-down conversions (33.3%).
The third-down struggles topped his list of frustrations. He was exasperated by the third-and-17, -18, -29 and -19 the Bears stumbled into during the second half.
“I’ve never been a part of something [that bad],” he said.
The Bears converted 3 of 10 third downs against the Bucs.
