What will Browns do at right guard? Cleveland Browns 20 questions for ’20 - cleveland.com

ciloklinggar.blogspot.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns will head into the expected start of training camp knowing who will start at four of the five offensive line spots. They invested heavily in tackles, signing Jack Conklin to play on the right side and drafting Jedrick Wills to play left tackle.

Joel Bitonio and JC Tretter return once again, adding some consistency in the middle.

That leaves right guard as the only question left on the offensive line.

The Browns had plenty of problems with right guard all last season with Eric Kush and Wyatt Teller being the two who started the most games at that spot.

Kush is gone, leaving Teller as the presumptive favorite for the role heading into camp. But he’s probably not locked into the job.

It should be an intriguing battle. So let’s take a look at the top competitors, including Teller, who will battle to start at right guard.

Wyatt Teller

As mentioned, Teller heads to camp as the favorite. The Browns acquired him in a trade with the Bills just prior to the start of the season. And he started nine games in 2019, all at right guard.

Pro Football Focus gave Teller a grade of 56.7 in 2019. The good news for him is he cut down on penalties, committing just two last season compared to the five he had as a rookie in 2018.

Considering he has the most starting experience of the main contenders, he will likely start camp as the No. 1 option at right guard. It will be up to him to keep that job and prevent one of the others from taking it from him.

Drew Forbes

Forbes is probably the No. 1 contender to wrestle the right guard spot away from Teller. The Browns drafted him in the sixth round in 2019, and he showed some promise before he was injured in the final preseason game against the Lions.

That injury really took him out of the mix for any playing time as a rookie even though he was activated from IR on Oct. 24.

He seemed like he was coming along as training camp wound down and could have been in the mix to get a start later in the season prior to his injury. But Forbes did get a couple of snaps on special teams as a rookie to at least get a taste of playing on Sundays.

Had he gotten a chance to work with Bill Callahan in a full offseason, his chances to start might have been even better. Regardless, he has plenty of promising tools and should be considered as Teller’s main challenger.

Chris Hubbard

It was clear last season the Browns’ tackles were a major issue. As much as Greg Robinson struggled at left tackle, Hubbard had just as rough a year at right tackle. He had a PFF grade of 50.5, allowed six sacks and committed eight penalties.

Hubbard has already lost the right tackle spot to Conklin. But he’s still on the roster as, at worst, a swing tackle who could step in for an injured player.

The Browns reworked his contract, and he could get a chance at another starting job at right guard.

Nick Harris

Harris, a fifth-round pick in April’s draft, is probably the least likely of these four to become the starting right guard.

He was brought in to possibly be the heir at center to Tretter. And Harris, who is 6-foot-1, 302 pounds, is more suited to be a true center in a zone-blocking scheme.

Harris could certainly find himself in the mix to play immediately at right guard. But it’s more likely 2020 is a learning season for Harris, where he can gain experience behind the scenes and be more ready to compete for a starting center job in 2021.
