Equality Florida

Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith

Taylor Hill

Equality Florida has been at the forefront of fighting Governor Ron DeSantis’ relentless flurry of legislative attacks against queer and trans Floridians, responding in real-time to combat everything from “Don’t Say Gay,” to the rollbacks on access to gender affirming care. The Executive Director, Nadine Smith, is a well-respected activist and one of Time’s 100 most influential people this year. Another influential member of the Equality Florida team is Pulse survivor Brandon Wolf who has proven an effective and compelling spokesperson for the organization, passionately skewering the cruel ironies of state legislatures’ fixations with drag queens and trans kids. Currently, Equality Florida is working toward a $125,000 year-end campaign, with a double match by the end of the year. You can help the nonprofit reach its goal by donating here

Familia TQLM

Familia TQLM supports trans Latinx folks, especially those who have survived detention, incarceration, and/or forced migration. The organization advocates for the Latinx queer and trans community despite the changing of political tides, famously exemplified by Familia co-founder Jennicet Gutiérrez’s 2015 bird-dogging of then-President Obama at a White House Pride event. This year, the activist declined an invitation to a Pride event by the Biden Administration, citing the administration’s detention and deportation of immigrants and the continued implementation of Trump-era border policies. While many would ignore this fact because Biden is a Democrat, Gutiérrez and Familia TQLM remain consistent. Make a donation to support their work here.

SisterLove

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, SisterLove is a nonprofit dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS among women. The organization offers testing, conducts prevention workshops, and advocates on local policy related to HIV-impacted individuals who may typically be targets of community outreach. Sister Love’s work is especially important in that Black women are historically excluded from intervention efforts — a trend that has led to Black women receiving HIV diagnoses at disproportionately high rates. Darkness Rising’s Rebuild Fund

Mental Health treatment is often inaccessible, especially for folks who are just being released from incarceration and have trauma from their time inside. Abolitionist and New York Times best-selling author Mariame Kaba encourages addressing this issue through supporting the work of Darkness Rising, a mental health nonprofit directed toward the Black community. Specifically, Kaba suggests donating to Darkness Rising’s “Rebuild” fund, which matches formerly incarcerated individuals of color with therapists of color for 10 free sessions. Sunrise Movement

Of course, one of the most pressing issues of our time is climate change. And so if you’re able to make a larger donation, consider supporting the activism of Sunrise Movement, one of the more revolutionary organizations dedicated to preserving the planet for future generations. They’re a youth-led, green policy-oriented organization that disrupts the comfortability of those with power through direct actions targeting elected officials and corporations that are ambivalent, or actively contributing, to the deterioration of earth’s ecosystems. Donate to Sunrise Movement here

Black and Pink

Abolitionist organization Black and Pink supports LGBTQ+ people who are incarcerated by facilitating letter exchanges with folks on the outside. Since 2015, the nonprofit has helped pair pen pals for writing campaigns year-round, organizing a concerted push during the holiday season. They have 11 chapter groups across the nation and support thousands of incarcerated LGBTQ+ people. Donate here

The Sex Work Outreach Project

The Sex Work Outreach Project is a national organization working to end oppression and violence against those who work in the sex trade. Through education and lobbying, the organization advocates the decriminalizion of sex work — a key issue for queer and trans folks considering the history of violence that surrounds our participation in this industry. Led by Alexandria LaRue, a queer, disabled, sex worker and activist from Texas, the nonprofit also offers resources directly to sex workers, including affinity groups, legal workshops, a community support hotline, and more. Whether doing sex work as survival, through personal choice, or even under coercion, no one should be criminalized for selling sex. Donate to SWOP here
