Baseball momentum usually has more to do with who’s on the mound than who’s swinging the bats.
But LSU has done about as much as the Tigers can to stay on a roll heading into the early weekend series against Auburn in Alex Box Stadium.
Riding a three-game winning streak that includes a series win at Florida last weekend, LSU has scored in double digits in each of the last three games while averaging 14 runs per game.
“We wanted to see our players carry the momentum from the Florida … and they did a good job of that,” LSU head coach Jay Johnson said after Tuesday’s 15-4 midweek over Louisiana-Monroe.
The hottest by far is designated hitter Brayden Jobert, who had five home runs in those last three games (nine for the season) while going 7-for-14 with 16 RBIs.
“Brayden had some great at-bats, and he’s shown the ability to make adjustments that have created more opportunities for him to drive the ball,” Johnson said. “He is certainly making a big impact on our team.”
Johnson has not announced his pitching rotation, although right-hander Blake Money (2-1, 4.05 ERA) normally starts the opener in a series and Ma’Khail Hilliard (2-0, 5.32) gave the Tigers a solid start in the middle game at Florida.
But he also may have found something in a pair of freshmen — Samuel Dutton (0-0, 0.69) and Grant Taylor (2-0, 2.20) — who combined to hold Florida to two runs on five hits in Sunday’s final game.
Auburn will go with junior left-hander Hayden Mullins (2-1, 3.52) tonight and junior right-hander Trace Bright (2-1, 2.23) on Friday.
LSU (18-7, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) and Auburn (17-8, 3-3) are part of a four-way logjam tied for second in the SEC West behind 5-1 Arkansas. No. 1-ranked Tennessee leads the overall race at 6-0.
“Auburn is hitting home runs (25) and hitting with power; they have a balanced lineup and a very good roster.
“They have a good, balanced pitching staff so we’ll have to be sharp in terms of taking quality at-bats and taking care of the baseball. Our pitchers will have to execute. We’re excited for this challenge. Our guys want to continue to work and improve on what they’ve accomplished so far, and this weekend provides an opportunity to do that.”
