Dodgers outfielder AJ Pollock strained his right hamstring on Saturday night while running the bases, and had to leave the game against the Giants in the first inning. Pollock could miss the bulk of September.
Pollock doubled home the Dodgers’ third run of the opening frame, but was picked off trying to steal third base by San Francisco pitcher Jarlin García. Pollock slid awkwardly into third base, and immediately grabbed his right leg after the play.
Dave Roberts said after the game Pollock suffered a Grade 2 strain of his right hamstring, and is expected to miss a minimum of two to three weeks.
He was helped off the field and into the dugout, and removed from the game before taking the field. Pollock started in left field, but was replaced by Cody Bellinger in center, with Chris Taylor moving from center to left in the bottom of the first inning.
“AJ coming out of the game took a little wind out of our sail,” Roberts said.
Pollock is hitting .297/.352/.508, a 132 wRC+ with 25 doubles and 16 home runs this season. He suffered left hamstring tightness that limited him for about a week in May, then missed 18 games on the injured list with a left hamstring strain.
“He’s a guy you can plug in there every day. He hits right, he hits left, he drives runs in, and gets on base. He’s just added so much to our ball club,” Roberts said. “To fill those shoes is going to be tough.”
Bellinger, hitting .169/.245/.311 this season, is expected to fill most of the outfield innings in Pollock’s absence.
“Cody is there for the challenge, and we’re going to need guys to step up around him,” Roberts said.
Thirty-four different Dodgers have been placed on the injured list this season, with that group combining for 47 different IL stints.
