Jon Gray might have started his final game for the Rockies Sunday afternoon. But the right-hander said he ignored that possibility when he took the mound at Dodger Stadium.
“I’ve been able to block it out,” Gray said after allowing two runs over five innings in Colorado’s 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. “With all the chatter, it can be hard to get away from it. But I’m just enjoying every day.
“Every day is a blessing. I can’t control the future, I’m just going to try to respond to it the best I can.”
“All the chatter,” refers to the persistent rumors as Friday’s trade deadline nears. Gray is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season and the Rockies have not yet made a move to re-sign him.
Gray’s .674 (31-15) career-winning percentage at Coors Field is the second-best mark in franchise history (minimum 40 starts) behind only Jorge De La Rosa (.726, 53-20). This season, he’s 5-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 10 starts at Coors.
Gray has said he’s open to staying in Colorado, but the trade buzz is loud. Scouts for numerous teams have been watching Gray closely, including the White Sox, Blue Jays, Reds and Padres.
Gray, the third overall pick in the 2013 draft, ranks second in Rockies history in career strikeouts (783) and fifth in career starts (140).
RyMac hurting. The Rockies could have used Ryan McMahon’s bat in Sunday’s close game in which the Rockies got just six hits and were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. But McMahon, who leads the club with 16 home runs and is hitting .328 (20-for-61) with four doubles and six RBIs through his last 17 games, was unavailable because of sore legs.
“He had some lower-leg stiffness and he just didn’t feel great, so he was unavailable,” bench coach Mike Redmond said. “It was (an) emergency situation only.”
On Deck
Rockies RHP Germán Márquez (8-7, 3.50 ERA) at RHP Shohei Ohtani (4-1, 3.21 ERA)
7:38 p.m. Monday, Angel Stadium
TV: AT&T SportsNet
Radio: KOA 850 AM/94.1 FM
Marquez, who has been one of baseball’s best pitchers since mid-May, was not quite as sharp in his last start as he had been. For four innings, he was excellent, looking like the ace who had posted a 4-0 record with an 0.75 ERA over his previous five starts. But in Seattle’s four-run sixth inning, Marquez was charged with five hits, including a two-run double by Cal Raleigh and a two-run homer by Dylan Moore. Marquez has faced the Angels just once, getting a no-decision after pitching seven innings and giving up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Ohtani is making his first career appearance vs. the Rockies (as a pitcher). This season, he’s been outstanding at Angel Stadium, posting a 1.87 ERA, compared to a 5.16 ERA on the road. In his last start on Monday at Oakland, he did not factor in the decision but pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out eight. He has allowed two-or-fewer runs in 10 of his 14 starts.
Trending: Catcher Elias Diaz hit two home runs in the Dodgers series, giving him nine this season, five of them in July. He is one homer shy of his career-high of 10, which he set in 2018.
At issue: Joshua Fuentes continues to struggle on the road. He went 0-for-4 Sunday, dropping his road average to .147 (17-for-116).
