“There are three possible outcomes,” Wyoming’s Governor Mark Gordon said, speaking plainly during a live briefing July 1, 2020.

Governor Gordon spoke the Governor’s Ceremonial Conference room in the State Capitol Building, Wednesday afternoon.

“Let me just point out I, like many Governors, have been anxious to reopen the economy. In our case, made the point that we never actually closed the economy,” Gordon said echoing his message from previous COVID-19 briefings.

The Governor said that he’s disappointed at the behavior of some people on the national scene, calling out what he said was “carelessness” that has lead to states outside of Wyoming rolling back or rescinding openings, after prolonged closures in the wake of the Coronavirus caused COVID-19 global pandemic.

The Governor, who has often expressed faith in Wyoming citizens to “do the right thing” when it comes to COVID-19 prevention, including wearing masks and exercising proper social distancing.

“We’re seeing states; Florida, Texas, Arizona, California; that are having to reconsider closures. This is not something we want to do,” the Governor said. “I cannot imagine having to reopen your business for a time and then kind of go back into a stringent order. So it really does depend on the people of this state, as it has right from the beginning, to exercise good judgement and to do the right thing. And I know you will.”

The Governor expressed three possible outcomes according to his analysis:

  • “We do the right thing, and we continue to stay open and see progress. I was very hopeful until about a week ago, until we could’ve eliminated all of our orders. Because of the fact that we’ve seen some of these changes, we’ve extended our orders to July 15th.”
  • “Maybe we have to do something kind of rescinding some of our orders, rolling them back. I know people are going to give us the victory salute one finger at a time, but maybe that’s something we have to do.”
  • “And if they don’t pay attention, then- as we have seen- businesses having to close, because their staff is sick, and they can’t do it.”

“Let’s do the right thing,” Gordon said.

Health officials with the Centers for Disease Control advise the following measures be taken

  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid close contact with others
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily
  • Monitor your health daily

The Governor, who has been recommending mask wearing for several weeks, is among multiple Republican Party political figures who have come out in favor of the practice recently.

Former United States Vice President and Wyoming celebrity Dick Cheney recently appeared on the social media account of his daughter, Wyoming’s Republican House Representative Liz Cheney, sporting a mask and encouraging others to do the same.

“It’s starting to come across. It’s actually kind of fun to see, as people are beginning to understand that there are ways they can wear their facemasks that are not political statements,” The governor said.
