Syracuse, N.Y. — Wolff’s Biergarten, a popular Upstate New York bar chain known for showing soccer matches, has temporarily closed because of concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, the owner wrote today on Facebook.

“The reason for closing temporarily is that bars do not feel safe right now,” owner Matt Baumgartner wrote. “I do not want to contribute to the growing cases we are seeing around the country.”

He said he and other restaurant owners are seeing a rise in cases on their staffs. Wolff’s has locations in Syracuse, Albany, Troy and Schenectady.

“For now, Wolff’s can’t be Wolff’s,” he wrote. “We really feel that pausing is best for everyone, and we will be thrilled to welcome you back, whenever that is.”

Plus, he wrote, “It is clear that many people just don’t follow the rules.”

Here’s the full statement, signed by Baumgartner:

“To our Friends of Wolff’s Biergarten,

“It is with much sadness, but with a sense of resolve about the future, that we are announcing all 4 locations of Wolff’s Biergarten — Albany, Troy, Schenectady and Syracuse — are temporarily closed, effective today, the 4th of July.

“The reason for closing temporarily is that the bars do not feel safe right now. Its defining characteristic was as a fun, close social atmosphere, with people packed together and cheering for their favorite teams. That’s not possible now.

“We, along with other local restaurants, are seeing a rise of Covid cases within our own teams, and it just doesn’t feel safe for our employees, and our guests. The model put in place for bars and restaurants just doesn’t work right now. And I do not want to contribute to the growing cases we are seeing around the country.

“Within the last few weeks of being open, it is clear that many people just don’t follow the rules. We’ve tried asking nicely and even firmly, but when people get excited and have been drinking, they either forget to follow the rules or they don’t care.

“And given the capacity limitations places upon bars/restaurants, we simply can not afford to add extra staffing to police everyone.

“For now, Wolff’s can’t be Wolff’s. We really feel that pausing is best for everyone, and we will be thrilled to welcome you back, whenever that is. For now, we can say only that we will reopen when we can do so safely and in the true spirit of the Wollf’s Biergarten you have loved and made so much fun for the past 11 years.

“On a personal note, I would like to add that is has been very difficult and beyond frustrating to own businesses in a country that is experiencing a total lack of leadership by our President regarding the handling of this virus. We deserve better.”
