This weekend Pat Lynch of the NYPD’s Patrolman’s Benevolent Association wrote an editorial in the N.Y. Daily News warning of the consequences for other union members if his members are stripped of their union.
Of course, he is right. It is a slippery slope down for all workers if the right to organize is denied to any worker. But, as a dedicated fellow trade unionist, I offer these thoughts:
Mr. Lynch and the PBA have been mostly quiet, as the same rights have been slowly undermined for all other workers. They have endorsed and voted for politicians that have attacked unions and worker protections for decades. (Many of those same elected officials are now very quiet themselves in regard to the PBA’s right to collective bargaining.)
They have done this while ensuring their members enjoy good benefits and retirement, in most cases benefits and retirement other workers don’t have. Now that Mr. Lynch’s union is in the crosshairs, he asks for labor solidarity. I’m obliged as a trade unionist to stand with the members of the PBA.
I support the rights of every police officer to belong to a union. They should be able to enjoy the protections a collectively bargained agreement brings to them. I believe a well-compensated police force is the first step towards addressing many of the issues workers in the NYPD have.
But, I hope the PBA and it’s members remember to make sure that right to organize is preserved for the rest of us in the future.
